New books added to the PsycBooks database

The American Psychological Association has added a number of books to the PsycBooks database. Six of the books are recently published; the rest are classics. You can find a list of the additions at http://www.apa.org/pubs/databases/psycbooks/new-releases.aspx.

Webster students, faculty, and staff may access the PsycBooks database as follows:

1. Go to the library home page at http://library.webster.edu.
2. Click on “Articles/databases”.
3. On the page that appears, click on “Psychology, Counseling, and Social Sciences databases”.
4. On the page that appears, scroll down to the “eBooks” section and click on PsycBooks. You will need to enter your seven digit ID number to gain access.

Once in the database, you can search by author, title, etc. When your book comes up, be sure and scroll down the page to find links to the individual chapters.

Save searches and results with an EBSCOhost Account

Do you worry about losing your flash drive with all of your research on it? Would you like to be able to re-run past database searches? Do you find emailing yourself articles cumbersome?

You might want to consider setting up your own EBSCOhost Account. This account will help you keep track of the research you do using EBSCOhost databases. It is free and easy and allows you to:

• Save and retrieve your articles and search history
• Organize your research within folders
• Share your folders with others and view others’ folders
• Create email alerts and/or RSS feeds informing you when new articles on your topic are published

Webster University subscribes to 38 EBSCOhost databases, including Academic Search Premier, PsycInfo, ERIC, Gender Studies Database, Family & Society Studies Worldwide, and SocIndex.

The link to set up your own account is at the top of every EBSCOhost database page. It reads Sign In to My EBSCOhost. When you click on it, select Create a new account. Please note that you must be signed into your EBSCOhost account to save and retrieve articles and search related data.

If you have questions about setting up your EBSCOgost Account stop by the Reference Desk or call us at 314-968-6950 (800-985-4279). You can also email us through the Library website at http://library.webster.edu . Just go to the Quicklinks menu at the top right and choose Ask a Librarian.

Update to DSM-IV in the Works

A recent article by Benedict Carey in the Feb. 10 edition of the New York Times described the work underway to update the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. A website where possible revisions are being posted along with visitor comments is available at http://www.dsm5.org.

To access the New York Times article (Webster only):

1. Click on this link: http://library3.webster.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=ip,cookie,url,uid&db=aph&AN=47981525&site=ehost-live. This will take you into the Academic Search Premier database and to the item record. You will need to enter your Webster identification number to gain access.

2. Once you see the record for the article on the screen, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Article Linker button.

3. On the page that appears, scroll down to the section that says “The article is available”. The first item listed is from the Lexis-Nexis Academic database.

4. Click on the link that says “Article” to the left of Lexis-Nexis Academic.

The ACA Encyclopedia of Counseling

The ACA Encyclopedia of Counseling has been added to the library’s collection. A-Z entries address the eight core areas specified in the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs’ (CACREP) standards:

Professional orientation and ethical practice
Social and cultural diversity
Human growth and development
Career development
Helping relationships
Group work
Assessment
Research and program evaluation

The encyclopedia is not currently available online but a print copy is located in the library’s 2nd floor Reference Collection (REF BF 636.54 .A23 2009).

eHRAF World Cultures database

Webster University students, faculty, and staff have access to a unique database for the study of cultural groups. The eHRAF World Cultures database includes full-text collections of ethnographic studies on various aspects of culture, such as history, linguistics, marriage and family, work, religion, etc. New users may want to select “Browse”, then “Countries” to view a list of cultures for each country. For the United States, a number of Native American Indian tribes are covered as well as groups originally from Haiti, Serbia, the Middle East, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Italy, Korea, Spain, etc. This database would be a helpful resource for counselors wishing a better understanding of a particular culture.

To access, go to the library’s home page at http://library.webster.edu and click on “Articles/Databases”. Scroll down to the “Databases by Subject” section and click on “Psychology, Counseling, and Social Sciences”.

News from APA re the PsycInfo Database

I attended a webinar about PsycInfo earlier this month and picked up a few tidbits of information to pass along to anyone interested:

1. They are working to increase the coverage of neuroscience and cognitive science in the database.

2. The print edition of the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms is ceasing publication. The online thesaurus will continue to be updated.

3. When they add a new journal to the database, sometimes they index it retroactively.

4. Specifying “KW Keywords” in the box to the right of where you enter your search terms will search for words supplied both by machine indexing and human editors. It can be a good way to find new theories and more specific terminology. It can also be a way to decrease the number of items in your results list.

5. APA has more tutorials on using its databases on its YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/psycinfo) and on its website at http://www.apa.org/databases/training/tutorials.html. Note that Webster’s version of PsycInfo is from Ebsco so it would be best to use the tutorials for that vendor.

Information on New APA Style Manual

The 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, also called the “APA Manual”, was recently published. While the entire manual is not available online, you can find a lot of helpful information at the publisher’s website, http://www.apastyle.org/. You will also find a link to the blog with ongoing discussions about how to interpret the style in various situations. Additional information about citation can be found at the Webster University Library’s page at http://library.webster.edu/citation/index.html.

Encyclopedia of Counseling is online

Webster students and faculty have online access to the Encyclopedia of Counseling, a source for indepth information on topics related to the field. This resource covers historical developments as well as emerging trends, and also references significant studies and individuals who have impacted the discipline. To access the Encyclopedia of Counseling, go to the library’s home page and click on “Books, etc./Library catalog”. Then search by title. This and other encyclopedias are also available via a database called the Gale Virtual Reference Library. From the home page, click on “Articles/Databases” to access.

New instructional video for Counseling
